The gastric sleeve (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy) is a proven, radically new procedure for obese sufferers of Type 2 diabetes with a Body Mass Index — BMI — of more than 30 (to calculate your BMI, click here). In this procedure the bariatric surgeon removes 60 to 85 percent of the stomach so that it takes the shape of a vertical tube or sleeve. The tube-shaped stomach that is left is sealed closed with staples.
